On one hand, it was well-written, it did a good job of describing the experience of depression from the point of view of someone who has experienced it, and it was validating to hear. The only thing I was disappointed about was that I had the impression the book was about how to overcome depression. I thought it would be good to read about how to do it from someone who had actually been through it. But the further I got through the book, the more I began to get the impression that the author hadn't actually overcome it so much as learned to live and cope with it. The book seemed to give the impression that you can't really OVERCOME the depression, as in, stop being depressed, so much as you learn to accept that it will always be there, and be a little more productive with it, and mediate some of the damage. This just made me more depressed. The book's description, to me, is a little misleading. I wouldn't have bought the book if I'd known it was just going to say, "Just kidding! You'll be depressed forever! There's actually no hope! I never actually 'overcame' mine! But here's how you can make it suck LESS and feel a little better about the fact you'll be depressed forever..." I kept waiting for the book to actually get to the part about how to BEAT the depression, and then the book was finished, and wondered if I missed something.

This is a good book if you are depressed and want to hear about someone else's experience to know you're not alone, and it does a good job verbalizing many feelings that are hard to put into words. But if your goal is to actually get BETTER, as in, no longer have depression, this book doesn't tell how to do that. It just reinforces the idea that the depression will never truly leave and tries to convince you to be ok with that.

I think a person who suffers from depression should refuse to accept that. You should shoot for a full recovery, and reducing and better coping with depression is not beating it.

What a great book for anyone who suffers with depression or a family member of someone who suffers. It's so honest and personal and helpful. It creates compassion for the person with the illness and that's where the healing begins for both the one that suffers and the one who loves the one suffering. Thank you Calix for writing this book. Buy this and pass it on. No one needs to suffer or suffer alone.
This book could also be subtitled "How to Free Your Mind From Destructive Thinking." Although the author uses depression as his foundation and in his examples, I found that much of his advice applied to other kinds of destructive habits and thinking patterns. I do not struggle with depression, but I have my own self-destructive habits--being a workaholic, having complicated emotional dependency on food--and there was a lot of information in this book I found helpful for dealing with my struggles. Some of the chapters made me understand why things I'd tried in the past (intentionally or inadvertently) had helped, and what I should keep repeating; other chapters gave me new ideas to try.

This book hands out advice just the way I like it--in straightforward, practical suggestions. The author doesn't try to break depression down into a science; he only discusses it briefly before diving into surviving and thriving on the everyday arena. He doesn't try to give a one-size-fits-all solution or a multi-step plan to reinvent your life. Instead, he gives simple advice for exercises and methods you can try applying to your everyday schedule. You don't have to try them all at once or work through the steps in order--just find something you can try today or tomorrow to help get your life under control. As the author himself says, he's just a beggar showing people where he got something to eat.

I will definitely be rereading this book again to glean some more advice from it as I continue to work on mastering my problems.

Note Don't let the title scare you; although it's about depression, it's not a dark and depressed book. Some nonfiction books are so dismal and brutal that you feel depressed just by reading them, but this book isn't like that. The author speaks briefly on the suicidal tendencies some people with depression experience, as well as touches on how some topics such as sex and drugs relate to someone with depression--but all in a tactful manner. One use of language is pretty much the only "adult" content in this book. The author keeps it practical and generally optimistic, making this a helpful read for both teens and adults in all stages of depression, as well those who are friends with them.

Reneau is not a professional. He's a survivor who is able to list his fouls, count his sins, swallow his pride and go at it anyways and this book is a refreshing antidote to all of the feel-good, coddly writings on depressions that often just don't seem practical or feasible. This is the angry man's book on depression. It spits on all the cuddly stuff, then picks it up, polishes it a little bit and pats it on the head good as new and you see it a whole different way. He realizes the cuddly crap is there for a reason and that's because it works...sometimes. He then gives realistic applications of actions as basic as "Go to work" or "Realize there's something greater than yourself."
